Micho Russell – 2 Jigs from the Barry Taylor Collection

Micho Russell's Slide (Micky Callaghan's), Behind The Haystack (Jigs) (Tape 002, Session 1, Item 14) (1975)

About

This is a recording made by Barry Taylor of Micho Russell playing two tunes at an external session at the Square in Miltown Malbay on 6th July 1975.

The two tunes are now commonly known Micho Russell’s Slide and Behind The Haystack.

Micho Russell’s Slide is a version of a tune associated with Patsy Geary that also goes by the name “Mickey O’Callaghan’s”. Although it is mostly know as a slide, the way Micho plays is more of a jig. Behind The Haystack is also sometime known as “The Munster Buttermilk”.

This recording is part of Barry Taylor’s collection, Tape 002, Session 1, item 14.

Many thanks to Barry Taylor for all is work in recording and collecting traditional music and for allowing us to use material from his collection, which is also available at the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) in Dublin. Make sure to check out his wonderful book “Music in a Breeze of Wind: Traditional Dance Music in west Clare”, which is available to order directly from Barry himself.
