Welcome
Welcome to “The Russells of Doolin”, a website dedicated to Micho, Gussie & Packie Russell, their family, their lives and their music.
The website is currently under construction and we have just started the process of populating the website with hundreds of archival items to come over the next few weeks.
Make sure to come back soon to see what’s been added!
The Russells of Doolin project is part of the broader project Tunes From Doolin, conducted by Charles Monod.
Charles is a concertina player and music researcher based in Doolin for the last 20 years.
This project is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
As part of The Russells of Doolin project, we are transcribing a number of tunes from the playing of Micho, Gussie and Packie Russell.
We will be adding more tunes in the coming weeks.
Micho Russell (1915-1994) was one of Ireland’s best-known traditional musicians in the latter half of the 20th century. He played the flute and tin whistle and was also a singer, dancer, storyteller.
Gussie Russell (1917-2004) also played flute and tin whistle. He was a quiet, private man, who lived, worked and played locally throughout his life, away from the spotlight which he wasn’t interested in.
Packie (or Pakie) Russell (1920-1977) was the youngest of the three Russell brothers. A stone mason by trade, he was a highly regarded concertina player in Clare and beyond. Packie was also very well-read.
